Remember me?
(July 9, 2001, cairolive.com)
Awan Al-Ward, the controversial Ramadan TV series chronicling two families' tumultuous journey into the heart of Egypt's Muslim-Copt debate -- with a police thriller sub-plot to boot -- came away with the lion's share of awards in the TV drama category of the Radio and Television Awards ceremony held at 6 October's Media City on Saturday night.
Practically everyone on the Awan Al-Ward team, from Youssra to Hisham Abdel-Hamid, writer Wahid Hamid and director Samir Seif, got honored in some way at the gala event, which took place against the backdrop of an outdoor Islamic set, dramatically lit up for the occasion.
Awan Al-Ward actually shared the gold for best social drama with the Yehia El-Fakharani sleeper hit Opera Aida. Screen legend Faten Hamam was also singularly honored for her role in Wagh Al-Qamar (Face of the Moon), but the show itself received no awards.
Overall, Egypt's 16 gold medals confirmed its status at the top of the Arab radio and television tree.
Amongst the country's other golds were, in the variety show category, the Splitting Image-inspired Illi Fatt Satt muppet-like show, and the children's cartoon Bakkar.

Flashback to cairolive.com's intense coverage of both Awan Al-Ward and Wagh Al-Qamar, as well as the rest of Ramadan TV.
About the festival:
The 7th annual Radio and Television Festival took place at the giant 6 October Media City. The festival featured industry-specific forums on subjects like "talk shows between freedom and responsibility", and "searching for new talent". There were also screenings, and an exhibition of the latest in broadcasting equipment. Gala song-and-dance dinners were held nearly every night at venues such as around the pool at the Media City's new Movenpick hotel, left. (photo by Tarek Atia).
