Since its inception in 1996,
cairolive.com has always been the premier Egyptian news and views
portal, and a true trendsetter. Quietly working from the sidelines, it
has attracted a larger and larger loyal readership and spawned a
generation of imitators with its focus on local news, utilizing the
power of the Internet to bring far-flung communities closer together.
history
In September 1996, a web-site called Exodus Egypt, catering to the large
Egyptian expatriate community around the world, was born. The site's
daily news updates, called Cairo Live!, compiled and written by
Egyptian-American journalist Tarek Atia, soon proved to be the most
popular and informative Egyptian news on the net. On July 23, 1998,
Exodus Egypt became cairolive.com. Since then, the site has gained even
wider exposure. Still a one man show, the pressures of daily life and a
professional career as a journalist soon forced Tarek Atia into fewer
and fewer updates. Today, with a small but dedicated team and a new
look, cairolive.com is poised to become the leading Egyptian news portal
with a global focus, committed to providing the most innovative content
on Egypt and its place in the changing world.
cairolive.com
today
Classic Cairo Live is the stalwart of the site. It is the
easiest, fastest way to put yourself in the know regarding the Egyptian
press. We choose the items that we feel provide a balanced slice of life
from Egypt, and summarize them for you. An added feature of
"classic" is the archived sections. Whenever you like, you can
browse through news from the past, conveniently divided into a wide
array of sections. Several years of pre-upgrade cairolive.com archives
by date are also available. We are in the process of archiving all the
older items into the previously mentioned sections for easier browsing
and searching.
Classic Cairo Live also features three other amazing departments:
Dardasha presents you with a regular update of what people are
talking about. It's all about the hot topic of the week, and the
different points-of-view on it.
The Critic is the first and only (and sure to be imitated) weekly
update on what's going on on everybodys favorite TV series, the 8
o'clock tamsiliya on channel 1. We present you with background on the
series, as well as updates on what's been happening to each character.
What's in the mags takes you on a quick weekly tour of the
contents of some of Egypt's most popular magazines. We also provide
links to highlighted articles when the publication has a web presence.
As well as Classic Cairo Live,
cairolive.com also features Ask Al-Zaieem, a unique service that
allows you to get answers to any questions you may have about Egypt.
Every week, Darwich, an Egyptian-American character invented by
Tarek Atia, takes you on a wild web ride.
The Pic of the Week provides you with an opportunity to get to
know the work of Egypt's famous -- and not so famous -- photographers,
while the Shrinking Globe web grab takes you, via insightful
commentary and carefully-chosen links, on a tour of some of the most
interesting transformations happening in the world today.
