No new airport for now
Plans to build a new airport in Cairo have been
scrapped, with the anticipated increase in flight
arrivals and departures to be handled by extensions to
the current Cairo International airport, most of the
papers reported recently. The two options -- a new
airport or extensions to the existing one -- were
presented to President Hosni Mubarak, who chose the
latter because, according to Information Minister
Safwat El-Sherif, it was the best and most efficient.

How to make a car
Al-Ahram recently provided its readers with a run-down
on both the total number of cars on Egypt's roads,
as well as details on how many of those vehicles were
actually assembled in Egypt.
Over the past 20 years (during the presidency of Hosni
Mubarak), the number of factories assembling cars went
up from 2 to 17. They are producing 45,000 vehicles a
year. Amongst the makes being put together are marquee
brands like Mercedes and BMW, as well as more
affordable models like Hyundai.
The paper says some LE7 billion has been invested in
the industry, which employs approximately 20,000
workers.
As for the total number of vehicles in the country,
the latest figures indicate over 2 million passenger
cars and some 650,000 lorries.

Bad times ahead
The September 11 attacks on the US have seriously affected Egypt's tourism, reports Al-Wafd today on its front page.
Up to 80 per cent of reservations from abroad have been cancelled, and it has been estimated that the financial losses from September until the end of the year will
reach over a billion dollars. Thousands of local employees working in the tourism field have also been laid off, the paper reports.

New contracts for the twins
Soccer twins Hossam and
Ibrahim Hassan have agreed in principle to renew their
contracts with Zamalek, laying to rest all rumors of their return to Ahli, Al-Wafd
reports. Meanwhile, Al-Akhbar reports that Ismaili tops the national league this week, and that Ahli have
reached the semi-finals in the African Champions League
after beating Algeria's Bolizdad 1-0.
