In brief
The in-between months
Cairo's weather is still hanging on to its last vestiges of summer-time. The mid-October days remain replete with sunshine and heat -- certainly short sleeve weather -- but nights are starting to be a little chillier. In homes across the city this month, people are busy taking out their winter clothes from the closets and replacing them with the summer ones. Windows are beginning to have to be shuttered up at night. But there's still a few months to go before the truly milder fall and winter weather overtakes the city.
Health
Just doing her job
Health Minister Ismail Sallam, report Al-Akhbar, was pleasantly surprised when a nurse at a Luxor hospital refused to allow him and his entourage from entering a sterile area in the hospital. The Minister praised her steadfastness to her duties as well as her courage, complementing her with a 15 day paid holiday, according to a tiny item on the front page of Al-Akhbar.
New developments
Metro movements and makeover
The Heliopolis metro line has recently had an interesting makeover. One of the trains seems to have been fully sponsored by Samsung, painted in the company's colors much like the black cabs are in London with their respective sponsors/advertisers. The new Samsung metro is an interesting sight rolling around the streets of Misr El-Gedida.
In other metro-related news, an interesting article in a recent Al-Akhbar indicates that the governor of Fayoum has submitted a request to the Cairo governor asking him if Fayoum can use the older Cairo governorate tram cars which are no longer in use. The Heliopolis and Nasr City lines are the last of the city's tram lines still working. Lines in Abbasia and downtown have been removed over the years. If moved to Fayoum, they would serve to link up the growing oasis's downtown to one of its new satellite cities, some 10 kilometers away.
Movies
Good use of Media City
The 6 October Media City seems to have a few new clients for its production and studio facilities. According to the back page of Al-Ahram, 6 US films with ancient Egypt as their subject matter -- and set to feature (according to the article) major international stars -- will begin filming at the city's pharaonic and Greek-Roman areas and sets beginning March 2002.
