Disregarding war
Even as tension in the region continues to increase, both Egyptian and Israeli leaders clearly expressed their aversion to the possibility of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict expanding into a regional war. The leaders' comments came in interviews with European publications in the past few days. President Hosni Mubarak told German magazine Der Spiegal that there is no alternative but peace, and that the US would intervene to stop a regional war from taking place. He also said Egypt would not pressure the Palestinians the same way the US does not pressure the Israelis. Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, meanwhile, told French publication Le Figaro that the chances of a regional war were very distant.
In the wake of visits to Egypt this week by both the Belgian and Spanish Foreign Ministries, President Mubarak and Foreign Minister Amr Moussa began a tour of Romania, Germany and Russia today. On the table is a larger European role in the peace process and bilateral political and economic relations between Egypt and the three countries being visited.

League's top spot for Zamalek
Zamalek have emerged as the top team in club league play, a full two weeks before the season is over. Zamalek's perch was sealed via a 2-1 victory over Ghazl El-Mahalla, giving the team 59 points. Ahly, in 2nd place, is out of the running at 8 points behind with only two matches left. This is the 9th time in its history that Zamalek has won the league, and club officials said players would receive bonuses of at least LE30,000 each.

Late bus results in court victory
An Alexandria man has won a court case against a local bus company, reports Al-Akhbar. The court ordered the bus company to pay the man LE1500 in damages for delays which resulted in the man not attending an auction where he was to conclude a business deal. The court found that the bus's mechanical delays resulted from negligence in the maintenance of the company's bus, and awarded the settlement on that basis.
