The theme of this year's festival is Romance, and the festival also honored several Egyptian stars who have made a strong imprint in the genre, including Nour El-Sherif, Mervat Amin, Ahmed Mazhar, Mahmoud Yassin, Naglaa Fathy, Mariam Fakhreldin, Lubna Abdel-Aziz, and director Atef Salem. The stunning Danish film, Dancer In the Dark, this year's winner of the Palme D'Or award at the Cannes International Film festival, was screened at the opening. British director Roland Joffee is the head of this year's jury, which will be awarding prizes to the best of the 18 films taking part in the competition and which include one Egyptian film -- Khaled Youssef's El-Asuifa (The Storm).
