Al-Zaieem answers all your questions about Egypt. Ask him your question here
I'm looking for some moderately priced hotels in Cairo that rent out by the
month. Could you give me some recommendations on some places that are near the bus routes because I don't drive. My Arabic is not that good, and I
would like to live in a neighborhood that is more English-friendly until I
develop my language skills.
Tarek Kamel
My friend, you sound like a prime candidate for Cairo's Wust-Al-Balad
(downtown) area. The vast urban stretch between Tahrir and Ramsis
Squares is full of inexpensive hotels and hostels that range in quality from
charmingly run-down to truly seedy. The area is vintage Cairo -- vibrant, noisy and
polluted, and features some very interesting architecture to boot. It also has enough of a
steady foreigner presence that I would definitely count it as
English-friendly. My best advice to you would be to just show up downtown
and start asking around. If you're looking for a slightly more isolated form
of English-friendly, the Nile island of Zamalek is home to a bustling
foreign population -- although not much there would qualify as moderately
priced.

Hi there, Zaieem! My fiancee and I decided to go live in Egypt. I'm Egyptian by birth and nationality, but he's an American journalist who doesn't speak a word of Arabic. Do you think
there are any possibilities for him to hook up with a newspaper or radio station or something there?
Amira M.
Amira, Al-Zaieem has some good news for you. Your fiancee has nothing to worry
about. Egypt is experiencing an English-language publishing boom -- one that
hasn't been matched by a similar boom in qualified talent. There's a huge
need right now for talented English-language writers and editors. Hell,
there's even a huge need for the not-so-talented ones. Your fiancee will be
offered multiple job opportunities for no better reason than that he speaks
native English. If he has actual journalism experience in America, chances
are he will be offered his own magazine to run within a year or so. No, I AM
NOT kidding.
