CAIRO BY NIGHT
The story behind the photo

FARGHALI FRUIT JUICE, DOKKI

Photo and text by Youssef Rakha

Sometimes, when there are two of you messing around with the camera in the car, you can take a picture right in front of your subject without anybody noticing what you're doing. That saves you asking permission and having to explain yourself when, rather than a journalistic assignment, all that attracts you in the scene is a quality of feeling: a combination of night-time dereliction and ready-for-action professionalism. Only late at night -- push-process abiding -- does Cairo yield such nearly perfect visions of far-fetched poise.

From a work in progress called "Monochrome Cairo" by Youssef Rakha, who can be contacted at yrakha@link.net

Technical specifications: The photo was taken using Kodak TMAX 400 shot at ISO 3200 and push processed, with Nikon 601 and 70-210 telephoto lens.
