Geopolitical dance

My husband and I are planning a trip to Cairo to the next Middle Eastern Dance Festival (Bellydancing Festival) in 2003. We just can't find out when the festival will be held exactly. Do you have any idea? Or can you give us the email address or telephone number of the organization?

According to veteran local dancer and instructor Raqia Hassan, the 4th Cairo Oriental Dance Festival is scheduled to run from June 10-16. The festival, entitled "Ahlan Wa Sahlan 2003", is supposed to take place at the Mena House hotel, but it sounds like things are up in the air  for  geopolitical reasons.

Hassan, the festival organizer, said it will take place, "If there’s no war" in Iraq. Prospective attendees and tour organizers are already hesitant to officially commit—and Hassan expects them to completely vanish if the US cruise missiles start flying. Hassan went on to direct a few choice comments toward President Bush, which Al Zaieem will refrain from repeating out of delicacy to our American readers.

For more information and updates, you can visit Hassan’s personal site: www.raqiahassan.net. For more general information on oriental dance festivals, lessons and tours, check out www.bhuz.com.

Good Luck!
