            Condemnations and boycotts
Arab foreign ministers met at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo
on Thursday to work out a coordinated Arab response to the
increasingly volatile situation in the Palestinian occupied
            territories.
The meeting resulted in a statement lambasting Israeli Prime
Minister Ariel Sharon, saying his "government [was] unqualified
as a partner in reaching a just and balanced peace."
The ministers were also critical of US bias towards Israel,
especially in light of last week's US veto of a UN resolution
attempting to establish a monitoring mechanism to ensure a cease
            fire between the two sides.
The statement also encouraged Arabs to boycott Israeli products, and
lent its full support to Palestinian President Yasser Arafat. It
called on the US to resume its role of an honest broker, lest the
situation worsen and bring the entire region into chaos.

            As
            the continent watches
Egyptian soccer club champions Ahly meet South African
champions Sun Downs today at Cairo Stadium at 8pm for the finals of
the African Clubs Championship. The long-awaited contest will be
watched by a full house at the stadium itself and by millions on TV.
Friday's papers are filled with news of the team's preparations for
the big contest, with most commentators predicting an Ahly win,
although some are warning that Sun Downs often play better away from
their home turf, where they tied Ahly 1-1 earlier this month.

            abroad
            Will you
            accept the charges?
If you are an Egyptian living in the United States, don't
be surprised if you get a collect call from your relatives or
friends in Egypt over the next few days or weeks. Worldcom has
placed a rather large ad in Friday's Al-Ahram promoting their
"collect USA" service, whereby people in Egypt dial a
local number and are immediately connected to an operator in the US.
The ad says, "You can check up on your loved ones and friends
in the US... Talk and don't pay.... "
Seasoned travelers have been using the international access codes of
ATT and MCI to make collect and calling card calls for years, and
usually the advertisements for these numbers appear in
English-language publications. This time, perhaps because of the
holiday season, or maybe because of all the news about Egyptians
having problems in the US post-911, the service seems to be
            targeting a more general audience.

            Supreme
            Court museum?
A back page item in Al-Ahram suggests that the grand old Supreme
Court building near the intersections of 26 July and Talaat Harb
Street downtown may soon become part of the Cairo tourist map rather
than continue to be a functioning courthouse. The item reports that
the Minister of Justice has announced that the building is no longer
able to handle the growing number of cases and appeals that are
being filed, and that an international competition will soon be held
to choose a new design and location for a new courthouse. Without
providing further details, the item seems to indicate that the
current Supreme Court will be turned into a museum of sorts.
