According to American sharia
Al-Wafd's front page cartoonist gets pretty harsh on the US air strikes against Afghanistan in Wednesday's edition of the opposition daily, titling his cartoon "No comment". It shows two US fighter planes, one dropping chickens onto Afghanistan, the other dropping bombs. The chickens have a sign on them saying, "Slaughtered according to Islamic sharia". The bombs, meanwhile, have hit a man, on whom is a sign that says, "Slaughtered according to American sharia". (October 25, 2001)

Miscellaneous
Wedding day boycott
The title of an article in this week's Al-Wafd says it all: "A wedding night political lesson: A bride refuses to enter her wedding party until it is empty of all American drinks". Turns out the bride at the Jordanian wedding reported by the paper was a strong believer in the movement to boycott American products -- and when she saw soft drinks with US brands on the tables she decided not to join in on her own festivities until the US-based soft drinks were all removed. One of the guests, impressed by her steadfastness, immediately went out and bought all the other guests locally-produced fruit juice instead, the paper says. (October 25, 2001)
