In brief
Cairo at center of efforts for peace
Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres was in Cairo on Sunday for discussions with President Hosni Mubarak and Foreign Minister Amr Moussa on Sunday. Peres brought with him the Israeli response to the Egyptian-Jordanian initiative, a proposal to end the Intifada and resume negotiations that the Palestinians have already agreed to. The initiative, which stipulates a freeze on all settlement activities and a time frame for final status talks, has found wide-ranging support in Europe, and an encouraging response from the US. In the wake of Peres's Cairo visit, there was still confusion as to whether a cease-fire in the conflict was on its way. To read more of what the English and Arabic language press had to say on this and other topics, take a look at Today's Top News Links.

Tuesday holiday
Tuesday May 1 is a national holiday in Egypt in celebration of Labor Day. Cairo weather has been on the edge of perfect over the past few days, as the city transitions into the beginning of summer.

Miscellaneous
Expat numbers corrected
An Arab labor organization, responding to a parliamentarian's claims that there are some 150,000 foreign workers in Egypt, released a much smaller number, acording to the front pages of most papers this week. Only 15,000 foreigners work in Egypt, the group said, breaking the number down into nationalities. The largest sector, at 7,000, are Arabs. 4,500 Europeans, 1,700 Asians and 1400 Americans nearly round up the rest.

Labor by inheritance
A cartoon on the back page of a recent Al-Wafd pokes fun at nepotism in the job market. An employer sits at his desk with a sign proclaiming "Assisstant Teacher Needed" stuck on the wall behind him. Speaking to a man who is applying for the job, the employer says, "What's wrong, sir? I already explained to you that the Dean's son has applied and been chosen, and we're just waiting for him to fill the position." The employer is pointing to the Dean's son, a baby sucking on a pacifier sitting in a chair in front of him.

Movies
An unlikely pair?
Akhbar Al-Youm reports that Youssra and Yehia El-Fakharani are set to star in a film called "Bahibak... Tani" (I love you... again). Not many details were provided about the film's plot, but the romantic combination between the glamorous Youssra and the talented but portly El-Fakharani is sure to raise a few eyebrows.

Is Adel Imam getting worried?
According to Al-Wafd, superstar Adel Imam may decide to postpone the release of his nearly completed next flm, Amir Al-Zalam (Prince of Darkness), till the next Eid al-Fitr holiday after Ramadan much later this year. Imam's film, about a veteran who loses his sight but somehow still ends up saving an important political figure from an assassination attempt, was originally slated for release during the big summer season, when films by young guns Mohamed Heneidi, Alaa Walieddin and Ahmed El-Sakka will be competing for the (mostly) young audience's bucks.

Television
Even more game show crazy
The popular MBC satellite channel game show, "Who wants to be a millionare?", itself the licensed Arabic version of the global hit, will soon be appearing simultaneously on Egyptian television screens, now that the TV Union has signed a contract with MBC to co-produce the show, reports Al-Akhbar. As of now, nobody has yet to win the million pound grand prize in the show's Arabic version. To read more about Egyptian TV's forays into the world of game shows click here.
