Sudden confusion
Explosions in Taba and other parts of Sinai destroy the 6 October holiday calm...

The Taba attack was the main headline in most of the world's press. Coverage of the explosions at the Hilton resort at the Egyptian border town with Israel dominated global news reports.

Although exactly what had happened was still not immediately clear, clues were starting to emerge. They told a story of a series of car bombs at three separate resorts, resulting in over a hundred injuries, and up to two dozen deaths.

An example of the way coverage was being spun could be found at the wildly popular US site Drudge Report, which titled its link to the story -- "Terror at Egyptian paradise".

The Jerusalem Post labeled the event "Terror in Sinai"... One of its stories discounts earlier reports that Egypt had hindered Israeli rescue efforts. There is also coverage of what it calls a new Exodus from Egypt -- with Israeli tourists saying they will never go back to Sinai again...

Egypt, meanwhile, is suggesting the blasts have something to do with Israel's ongoing and extremely deadly Gaza raid, which has killed nearly a hundred Palestinians, most of them civilians, in just a few days.

The Palestinians, however, are saying it's not connected.

In general, there has been a serious lack of Egyptian coverage of the event, thus necessitating that most information come from Israeli or Western media sources.

A very comprehensive AP story strangely says "Israel's military took command of the scene" ... How is that possible when the hotel is in Egypt? An Egyptian government spokesman is quoted here as well.

The latest AP report put the death toll at 19, but there's still some confusion. It also suggests that the bombs were the work of a car bomb and a suicide bomber. Egypt's tourism minister is also quoted.

USA Today focuses on the fact that Israel had issued a concrete warning in the past few weeks about the possibility of an attack on Sinai.

CNN reports Israeli claims that Al-Qaeda was behind the blasts.

This Haaretz report actually says the final death toll will probably include more Egyptians than Israelis.

The Independent places the incident in the context of Taba being a town where lots of failed Palestinian-Israeli peace negotiations have taken place.

Meanwhile, security has been boosted everywhere after the blasts...
