DISPATCH

It's become the common refrain whenever Cairenes visit Alexandria -- have you seen how clean the city has become?

Photos and text by Tarek Atia

Over eid weekend, the coastal city's ability to stay clean was tested in a most rigorous fashion.

Every day and every night over the long weekend, the crowds thronged to the Corniche and Ramleh square, strolling, playing, eating, shouting, laughing...

The carnival came and went, and consistently, by morning, the streets would be clean again.

The city has contracted its garbage collection to a French multinational called Onyx. It's hard to miss the many Onyx trucks hustling up and down the highway that takes you into the city, and along the city's streets themselves. And, as the picture below shows, there's also a little reminder as you leave the Greek-temple style gates of the toll road on the way back to Cairo.
