New tales of greed and thrift in the cigarette price saga

by Tarek Atia

(cairolive.com, February 11, 2002)

The Eastern Company, expecting a boost in consumption of locally-made cigarettes now that foreign brands have gone up to a punishing LE5.50 a pack, increased its market distribution by 21 million cigarettes to 200 million cigarettes a day, it was reported recently.

The cigarette price saga has been on the front pages of most papers over the past few weeks, and most recently, a tiny item on Al-Ahram's front page again reassured consumers that there was no plan to increase the prices of local cigarettes at this time.

In a related development, Al-Wafd recently fronted a police bust of a merchant in Alexandria who had stored up some 4000 cartons of foreign brand cigarettes over the past few months -- with no concern as to the quality of the tobacco -- in response to the rumors that the price was going up. The tiny item is titled "Al-Gashaa" (Greed).
