Wall kills enthusiastic Ramadan congratulators
An inexplicable article in Wednesday's Al-Wafd says that three people were killed on the way to the Central Telephone Office in Maadi, after a wall collapsed on them. Apparently the three were going to call their families and congratulate them on the start of the Ramadan Holy month before the wall collapsed, killing all three.

Baba Fein Fanoos is the latest trend
Every Ramadan a new type of Fanoos (lantern) is known to be the "hit of the year." This year, according to Wednesday's Al-Akhbar, the fanoos that has won the competition is the one that sings the currently mega-popular kids song "Baba Fein" (Where is Daddy?). The article says that buyers swarmed the streets to buy lanterns for their children at prices that are relatively higher than last year's.

The Modern Merchant
In Wednesday's Al-Akhbar an article entitled "The Dates Merchant of the year 2002 is Modern," is accompanied by a picture of a man wearing a shirt and trousers. The article explains that Egyptians are used to merchants wearing a galabeya and that it was thus "strange" to find that this year there were merchants wearing "modern" clothes.

Special pages in newspapers dedicated to Ramadan
With the arrival of the holy month, several Egyptian papers are issuing special pages dedicated to this season. Al-Wafd, for instance, will issue two pages daily featuring in-depth coverage of news that is of interest to Muslims, including religious opinion and advice.
The newspaper will also dedicate a page -- entitled "The Screen in Ramadan" -- to entertainment news. This page will comment on the various programs and shows aired in Ramadan, including a section that will list the movies showing that day on the different Egyptian channels.
"The days and nights of Ramadan" is the title given to the section dedicated to Ramadan -- which will be available everyday during the next month -- in Al-Akhbar. The two-page section will include historical stories of Muslim prophets, news on Ramadan trends, and advice on how to be a better Muslim during this holy month.
