Al-Zaieem answers all your questions about Egypt. Ask him your question here

Dear Zaieem,
I have been frantically and relentlessly searching for information on the new library of Alexandria. Apart from the feel good puff pieces, I haven't been able to find any substantial information. I'm looking for editorial pieces, critique and debate on the winning design etc.

Joanne Weyman

Puff pieces, unfortunately, make up the vast majority of stories written about the shiny new edifice rising up on the Alexandria corniche. The Egyptian government is understandably quite proud of the project, and has done a fairly effective pr job resulting in largely positive, non-critical coverage so far. The closest thing to a critical piece Al Zaieem has seen was in the New Yorker, and focused more on the fact that the multimillion dollar project won't do anything to boost Egypt's nationwide literacy rate. You might have to wait until later in the year, when the library nears its opening date, to find hints of the kind of criticism you're looking for.

Alo Zaieem,
I am moving to Cairo from NYC. My question is, what is the club scene like in Cairo. I love hip hop and reggae. Any suggestions?

Layla

Cairo does have a couple of dance floors sprinkled about, but unfortunately many of them boast the kind of music mix that you might hear at an American wedding -- lots of Ricky Martin and the inevitable medley from the movie Grease. There is the occasional hip hop club out there. A club called Exit downtown was once a pretty cool place to hear good hip-hop, and another club called Africana on Pyramids road also remains an anchor of the local hip hop scene. But mostly you'll have to make friends with other hip-hop lovers and find out where the private parties are. You will, though, be hearing lots of techno blaring from the speakers of cars driving by you on the road.
