CAIRO BY NIGHT
The story behind the photo

TIRE REPAIRS, TAHRIR ROAD

Photo and text by Youssef Rakha

My overenthusiastic escort was among a small group of young men playing a game of football right in the middle of the road. It was long past midnight, and they would stop momentarily to make way for the occasional vehicle hurtling past. To my distress, by the time I made their acquaintance the ball had been kicked unequivocally out of sight. They spent a long time introducing themselves: mechanics, taxi drivers and their neighbors from the back streets of Dokki or, as they insisted on calling it, Dayer Ennahya. To them the presence of a so called photojournalist in their midst was a moment of glory: the purveyor of the nearest tire repairs shop -- not necessarily very comfortable about his shop being photographed -- was presented to me as a monarch, almost, while my self-appointed escort became principal courtier, as it were; which might explain the self-satisfied, almost proud smile with which he now pointed to the shop interior.

Technical specifications: The photo was taken on Kodak TMAX 400 film rated at ISO 3200, push processed and printed on Kodabrome F3 paper, using Nikon F601 and 28-80 Nikkor zoom lens.
