Miscellaneous
Sacrifice and pride
(cairolive.com, March 19, 2002) This year's "Ideal
Mother and Father" awards have been announced -- pictures of
the winners are on the front pages of most papers today. The ideal
mother is Zeinan Hamed from Aswan, who gave up one of her kidneys
for her son, and the ideal father is Kamel from the New Valley, who
managed to educate his children to the highest levels, despite his
own low income level. The Ideal Mother award has been given out for
the past 30 years, while the Ideal Father merit is a relative
newcomer.
Crime
A dent will do it
(cairolive.com, March 19, 2002) By slamming his taxi into a
curb, a taxi driver may have saved his car and life. Al-Akhbar
reports that a taxi driver who had picked up three passengers one
early morning found himself being robbed at knife point as he was
taking them to their destination. They wanted both his wallet and the
car itself. Rather than attempt to resist them physically, the
astute driver slammed the car into a curb, and the three men
then attempted to run away from the accident in fear of the police.
One was caught by the driver, the paper says, and he eventually
ratted out his two accomplices.
Archaeology
A promotion for Hawass
(cairolive.com, March 20, 2002)
Culture Minister Farouk Hosni appointed archaeologist Zahi
Hawass to head the Supreme Council of Antiquities on Tuesday, replacing
Gaballah Ali Gaballah, whose term at the post ended a few weeks
ago,. Hawass -- perhaps Egypt's most famous archeologist -- has been
the director of the Giza plateau for some time now.
Commentary
Still sore after train
crash
(cairolive.com, March 19, 2002) A cartoon in Al-Ahram reveals
the cynicism prevalent at present over the ramifications of the
Luxor train disaster. The cartoon, by Gomaa, shows a group of upper
Egyptians having a massive party complete with drummers, mizmar
players, stick dancing and more... Explaining the reason for the
fest, one man says to another, "No no, he hasn't just come back
from the hajj, it's just that he managed to come home safely on a
southern bound train..."
