In
brief
Sudden
warmth
(cairolive.com,
March 8, 2002) Cairo's weather has improved significantly in the
past few days. But with the sun
shining hard all day Thursday and Friday, and temperatures in the low 30s
centigrade (low 90s Fahrenheit), some still warned that,
"Starting to dress like it's summer-time is a big mistake. It's
going to get cold again."
Whether or not winter is really over remains to be seen -- but
according to most meteorologists, the weather is set to remain at
least this warm, if not warmer, for the next few days, and certainly
over the weekend.

One martyr per hour
(cairolive.com,
March 8, 2002) A
front page headline in Al-Akhbar's Friday edition announces,
"One Palestinian martyr per hour". The item reports on the
intensifying Israeli incursions in Palestinian territories which
resulted in the deaths of 24 Palestinians in a 24-hour period.
"That's a rate of one martyr per hour," the paper writes.

Too much hajj luggage
(cairolive.com,
March 8, 2002) The
Egypt Air lost baggage warehouse at Cairo International Airport is unusually
full in the post-eid rush this year, reports an item on the front
page of Al-Akhbar. With 150,000 pilgrims returning from Mecca on 181
flights over the past week or so, it seems a great deal of them were
"so excited to greet their waiting relatives", that they
forgot to pick up their bags. Because the warehouse is so full, the
paper says, this year Egypt Air will be personally delivering many
of the bags to their owners, based on the addresses written on the
baggage claim tags.

Music
Diab reaches out
(cairolive.com,
March 8, 2002) A tiny item in Friday's Al-Ahram indicates that
pop star Amr Diab's producers are trying hard to get Diab into the
studio with internationally famous singer Shakira. The tiem
describes Shakira as a Lebanese-born Columbian whose last few songs
have done extremely well. The item says Diab's producers are
currently involved in intensive secret negotiations with the singer,
hoping Diab will be able to capitalize on her fame.
