In brief
Temperatures soar into summer-time
It looks like summer may have begun a little early this year in Cairo, as temperatures soared to the high 30s centigrade this week. The warmer weather took a lot of people by surprise since, this time, one couldn't place the blame on the boxy, dusty winds of the khamaseen. This time it was pure unadulterated summer heat. And you can bet there's going to be a lot more where that came from, making air conditioning a necessity from now on.

No war, no peace
Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher had harsh words for Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon on Wednesday, and encouraging commentary on potentially increased US involvement in ending the conflict. Commenting on an Israeli statement that a cease-fire would be implemented, Maher said "words are not important. There were promises, there were threats. We believe neither promises nor threats."
The Egyptian Foreign Minister asked Israel to "prove with your actions that you are serious about wanting to make peace. Till now what we have seen doesn't lead us to believe that they want to work for peace or have a plan for peace. Instead we see a plan to continue aggression against he Palestinian people. I ask you to compare between a people who are fighting occupation and an occupying power that does not respect international law and uses high-tech weaponry to attack civilian populations."
Maher reiterated President Hosni Mubarak's comments that "what happened in 1967 will not happen again. War is not the solution."
Maher spoke positively about the US taking a more active role in attempting to find a solution to the current crisis, saying "we were asking the US to play a more active role, now they are playing an active role. We welcome this, and we are going to cooperate with them." Maher said the US's involvement is not "contradictory" to Egyptian and Jordanian attempts to broker a peace. "Our role is different from the role of the United States. We are part and parcel of the region [and] of the Arab position which is calling for the implementation of international legitimacy of international resolutions."
Maher indicated that the new US envoy to region, the current US ambassador to Jordan, will be meeting with officials in the region beginning the next day or two.
Maher's comments came at the close of the two-day COMESA summit which ended in Cairo on Wednesday.
