New developments
Directories and guides

(cairolive.com, September 23, 2002) A user-friendly wave has descended on Egyptian publishing, with new guides being published all the time. You read about the new Arabic "tourist guide" to London in this same spot a few weeks ago... Now, a recent Al-Ahram features an ad for a "Medical Directory"... At LE25 it's kind of expensive, but it should prove to be a handy thing to have at home, considering how many doctors there are out there, and how word-of-mouth is currently one of the only ways to find out who or where any particular doctor is.

Ad watch
Strange five star

(cairolive.com, September 23, 2002) A rather confused full color ad appeared in Al-Ahram recently for a company called "Wizo", that sells frozen food products... The ad says "Wizo" is like having a "five star restaurant in your house every day". The products that are pictured, however, don't seem very five star at all -- hotdogs, hamburger, nuggets, drum sticks, wings...
Unless, of course, that kind of food is considered five star in Egypt -- which, considering the kind of clientele who frequent places like McDonalds and Chilis for burgers, it seems to be.

Politics/headline news
Money back guarantee

(cairolive.com, September 23, 2002) The papers have been positively obsessed with the government and banks' attempts to get their loan money back from the businessmen who have defaulted on loans big time... The billions of pounds in loans are part of the reason that the Egyptian economy is in dire straits. The most high profile of all these cases is certainly Rami Lakah, the businessman turned parliamentarian who was stripped of his seat for being a dual national.
Al-Wafd's recent headline says the efforts -- however -- were all in vain... "The runaway businessmen ignore the governments initiative and announce their refusal to repay," the opposition paper says.

Commentary
All at once

(cairolive.com, September 23, 2002) Schools are back in session and that means plenty of articles are being published on a daily basis on this subject (see previous item).
A recent Al-Wafd featured a front-page story on how private lessons -- the bane of scholarly existence -- have also begun from the very first day of school. They've illustrated the story with photos of school yard walls already plastered with ads for private lessons...
