In
brief
Freezer city
An arctic chill continues to permeate the Cairo air, with
temperatures in the low teens and sometimes hitting the single
digits at night. This winter has been especially tough on Cairenes,
moving as it has from a two week mid-November spell of Siberian
winds, to a brief grace period of moderately warm weather around the
end of Ramadan and the Eid, then back again to the bone chilling
cold of the past week or so. Meteorologists haven't even dared to
predict when this latest cold wave might end, but most people are
expecting it to run out the course of the winter, at least through
the end of January.

Where
are they now?
The Egyptian Foreign Ministry has sent an official
request to US authorities, asking for details on the conditions and
status of at least 74 Egyptians being held in custody in the US in
connection with the events of September
11. The news of the request, which was delivered by Egyptiam
Ambassador to the US Nabil Fahmy, made the front pages of most
papers on Sunday. Fahmy met with representatives of the US
Immigration and Naturalization Services, in an attempt to also
confirm news of the supposedly 21 Egyptians who have either been
released or deported by the US since September 11, the papers
report. The Egyptian detainees are part of the 1000-plus mostly
Arabs and Muslims being held by US authorities -- most are believed
to be facing violations relating to their legal stay in the United
States, and none have been charged
with terrorist related activities.

Painting the
page red
Riding on the wave of its soccer team's recent African championship
win, the Ahly sporting club will be awarding each of the team's
players LE120,000, reports Al-Wafd. The team defeated South African
champions Sundowns 3-0 at Cairo Stadium on Friday night to become
the continent's top club team this year. The papers have literally
been painted red with red headlines and plenty of photos of the
red-shirted team celebrating their victory.
