A tiny item on the front page of Al-Akhbar reports that an Egyptian

born at the stroke of midnight on January 1, 2002, in Rome. Ilham's
mother Mounira was undergoing a Caesarian delivery, the paper says.

Up
with cigarettes
A tiny item on Al-Ahram's front page indicates just how
prevalent smoking is in Egypt. The paper saw fit to front the news
that Marlboro, Merit and LM cigarettes had experienced a price hike
in the wake of the Egyptian pound's continuing troubles. The pound's
loss of value vis a vis the dollar had brought the price of a pack
of cigarettes up to LE4.50 less than a year ago -- now, with yet
another devaluation, the cigarettes, which are put together in Egypt
under license from abroad, will cost LE5 per pack.

-- had Blair not run into a group of British journalists in Cairo
heading back home after covering the OPEC meeting last week. The
Blairs were on a private holiday that included a trip to the
Pyramids and an informal meeting with President Hosni Mubarak in
Sharm El-Sheikh. The Guardian said that by going to an Arab Muslim
country after September 11, Blair had "put his money -- and his
family -- where his diplomatic mouth has been"...
