Our September 11?
Two days after the fact, there has been lots of news, but still very little clarity regarding the who and why of the Taba terror attacks...

--The LA Times says, "The bombings instantly propelled Egypt, which had managed to avoid the recent upheavals of its neighbors, into a post-Sept. 11 reality of spiraling regional bloodshed and instability..." The story includes very interesting analysis by Al-Ahram's Diaa Rashwan about how the attacks will affect developments in Gaza, as well as the emergency law debate at home.

--While there has been lots of international condemnation of the blasts, an interesting dynamic emerged from Iran, which actually condemned the international condemnation... "How come there is no noise about the shedding of Palestinian blood but a retaliatory act is expected to be condemned so much?" Rafsanjani asked during the weekly Muslim prayers in Tehran. "In Taba some angry people blew up a place they believed Israelis were staying. It is not known yet who has taken revenge ... and now all countries are lining up to condemn it in the media."

--The good news is that European- and Gulf-based tour operators look to be emerging unscathed from the incident, predicting no effect on their business since the bombings clearly only targeted Israelis in Taba, and not tourism in general. Egyptian commentators, meanwhile, like Basata's Sherif El-Ghamrawy and El-Masry El-Youm's Hisham Kassem, are predicting dire consequences for the tour industry in this Pittsburgh based report. But according to the BBC, even though Taba is popular among British tourists, they are realistic about the possibility of terror everywhere.

-- While the latest AP report looks at Israeli claims that Al-Qaeda did it, Egyptian authorities are being more cautious about laying blame, and stepping up security everywhere... ABC reports that three previously unknown groups claimed responsibility for the attack. BBC analyzes... and Egypt, meanwhile, says it has 13 suspects under surveillance -- most are Sinai residents or regular visitors to the peninsula. Al-Ahram also makes it clear in its front page banner that Egypt is in charge of the investigations, and that Israel is just helping with the rescue efforts..

-- Meanwhile, rescue efforts to find the over 30 people still missing continue... Of the 232 Russians who were staying at the Taba Hilton, one died and 8 were injured, says this Russian report. A lucky New Zealander who survived tells the press his story. Other eyewitnesses talk to the BBC. Plus, CNN's take, and an impressionistic piece by the Washington Post's Jerusalem correspondent who used to stay at the Hilton Taba a lot... The Post also provides a photo gallery.
