Shopping for dates
Ramadan is less than a week away, and people across the country are preparing for the holy month of fasting. Yamish, the dried fruits traditionally eaten after iftar at sunset, are being sold everywhere you turn, as are the fawanees (lanterns) that have become extremely popular over the past few years. These days, the lanterns come in all shapes and sizes, and play a variety of songs. New this year are fawanees that sing the pep songs for the Ahli and Zamalek clubs, as well as last year's favorites that belt out "Wahawi ya Wahawi" and Fayrouz's "Zahrat al-mada'in"
