CAIRO BY NIGHT
The story behind the photo

KANAFANI AT WORK, TAHRIR ROAD

Photo and text by Youssef Rakha

Even a posed portrait can convey a sense of immediacy. The art of konafa-baking is exacting, exquisite and almost mystical in its exalted uniqueness. Principally a kanafani during the holy month of Ramadan, the young and hip Hagg Omar who oversees this bakery off Faisal Road, Haram, works for the rest of the year as a fatatri (a feteer specialist). The scene encapsulates a prominent aspect of the city's often culinary-oriented night life, and the business of photographically reproducing it was facilitated by the subject, who was admirably neither camera- nor self-conscious.

From a work in progress called "Monochrome Cairo" by Youssef Rakha, who can be contacted at yrakha@link.net

Technical specifications: Shot on Kodak TMAX 400 film, rated at ISO 3200, push processed and printed on Kodabrome F3. Camera was Nikon F601 with Nikkor 28-80 zoom lens.
