In brief
Not quite normal yet

While early last week saw intense rain, and its standard after-effects -- traffic jams, flooded streets, etc. -- the weather has since stabilized a bit.
It's safe it say that it leans towards rather warm in the daytime -- meaning sunny cloudless skies -- but then suddenly veers into cold once the sun goes down, getting even chillier deep into the night.
Meteorologists are predicting more of the same for now.

Politics/headline news
Mubarak to Washington in March

President Hosni Mubarak is set to visit Washington between March 2 and 6, the papers report. Mubarak will hold talks with US President George W Bush and top administration officials, as well as members of Congress and the business sector.
The Palestinian-Israeli crisis will certainly be near the top of the agenda, as will Washington's next move in its war on terror. In addition to discussing ways to shore up the Middle East peace process, Mubarak also aims to promote increased economic ties between the US and Egypt.
Al-Wafd Editor in Chief Magdi Mehanna says the US visit will be Mubarak's toughest ever. Amongst the "thorns" he'll be walking through, Mehanna writes, are the US administration's vision of a good-vs-evil world and its widely-reported plan to attack Iraq -- a move which Egypt has clearly indicated it disapproves of. Even though he has little faith that the US will change its mind, Mehanna still argues that the talks will be important, if only to emphasize Mubarak's viewpoint. That view was summarized by Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher, who is quoted on the front page of Al-Akhbar saying the best way to fight terrorism is to bring hope to the region via a just solution to the Palestinian-Israeli problem.
On this matter, Bush and Mubarak have been in frequent phone contact. The last call took place on Tuesday, and the Egyptian President met with CIA chief George Tenet on Saturday. Mubarak is widely credited with convincing the US administration not to cut off ties with Arafat.
US Vice President Dick Cheney will visit Egypt later on in March and the Arab Summit is set to take place at the month's end.

German-made Egyptian toy wins big
A tiny item on the back page of Al-Ahram makes no attempt to hide its cynicism about the fact that a German company made the Pyramid and Sphinx wooden toys that recently won prestigious prizes at the Nuremberg Children's Toy Festival. Eighty-two nations including Egypt participated in the event.
That a product with an Egyptian theme -- but not made by Egyptians -- should do so well is perhaps all too familiar a story. It's also a story that could certainly use some serious rewriting.
The benefits associated with products having Egyptian themes -- no matter who makes them -- is much appreciated and noted, of course, but the original copyright holders of the material, so to speak, should no doubt be playing their cards a little shrewder.

Alexandria photo wins world competition
A photo taken in Egypt -- off the coast of Alexandria in Abu Qir -- has won second prize in the science and technology category of the 2001 World Press Photo Awards. The images were captured underwater, revealing the stunning archaeological treasures currently being explored and preserved in that historic spot.
The winning photographer is Christoph Gerigk, of Germany, for Franck Goddio/HIlti Foundation. The contest is sponsored by the nonprofit World Press Foundation, based in the Dutch capital of Amsterdam.
