brief
Mothers' day today
(cairolive.com, March 21, 2002) March 21 is Mothers' Day in
Egypt, and the papers are filled with ads for flowers, watches, and
all kinds of mothers' day gifts, as well as editorials, cartoons and
photos all about mom's big day.

Addicted to vacations?
(cairolive.com, March 21, 2002) Al-Wafd co-editor-in-chief Abbas El-Tarabili writes
a sarcastic, scathing piece on the paper's Thursday front page
critical of Egyptian employees' addiction to vacations. The piece is
jump-started by the controversy over the government's retraction of
last Thursday's Islamic New Year holiday. He suggests -- after
much soul searching and comparisons to the German, Japanese and
Canadian workforce -- that Egyptians had better become addicted to work in
order to build the Egypt of the 21st century.
Events
Free military museums
(cairolive.com, March 21, 2002) All military museums across the country as well as
the 6 October Panorama will be open free to visitors for the next
week, report the papers, in honor of Memorial Day.

No decision on daylight
savings
(cairolive.com, March 21, 2002) Magdi Mehanna of Al-Wafd quotes
Al-Akhbar as the source for
some of his ruminations on the history of daylight savings time
in Egypt. He says the same excuse -- that
daylight savings is either better or
worse for electricity consumption -- has been used by the
government to impose, then retract, its decision to use daylight
savings times several times in the past few years. He says it was
first instated in 1958, then cancelled in 75, then brought back in
82, then cancelled again in 85, then brought back in 88, and now
they're thinking of canceling it again. Whether or not it saves electricity has become beside the
point -- why a final decision can't
be taken seems to be more of the issue here.
