Health
Driving while sleeping
An Aswan medical conference has suggested that chronic
fatigue is one of the leading cause of automotive
accidents in Egypt. People with the illness may
suddenly fall asleep, up to three and four times a
day, putting themselves and those around them at risk.
Although the condition can be treated if discovered,
most of those who have it are not even aware that it
is a medical problem. These were some of the findings
of a study begun by Ain Sham University's Sleep
Laboratory in 1997, which were presented at the Aswan
conference, reports Al-Ahram, along with 20 other
papers on different aspects of physical and
psychological stress. To read about other forms of road stress, click here.

New developments
Ramatan is free
The Taha Hussein Museum in Giza will be opening its
doors free to the public from October 28 - November
14, in commemoration of the death anniversary of the
dean of Arabic letters. The blind Hussein emerged from
simple village beginnings to a prolific career in
cosmopolitan literature and education. His museum --
located in the suburban Giza home his French wife
called Ramatan (which means two shelters in the
desert) -- is a tribute to that merge of versatile
traditions. Hussein died on October 28, 1972 after a
long career that spanned -- and helped shape -- some
of the important transformations of 20th century
Egypt.

Movies
Festivals come, festivals go
Pauline and Paulette, a Belgian film, won the Golden
Pyramid first prize at the recently concluded Cairo
International Film Festival. The Festival's 25th round
was dampened this year by the events of September 11
and their aftermath. Many of the brightest
international guests and press were unable to attend.
The festival went on nonetheless, featuring over 160 films from over
40 countries. An Egyptian film, Inas El-Deghiedi's
controversial Memos from a Teenager, took the prize
for best Arab effort.
In Ismailiya, meanwhile, another film festival is
beginning, this one the reprise of the long-running
Ismailiya Documentary Film Festival. The festival --
which had been cancelled for the past few years -- is
being resurrected in grand fashion this year,
featuring 163 films, of which 53 are in official
competition. The festival began on Saturday October
27.

Radio
Faten Hamama after sunset
Al-Ahram reports that Faten Hamama, the grand dame of
the Egyptian screen, will be with us again this
Ramadan, although via the airwaves rather than on TV.
Last year Hamama played the much loved lead role in
the soap opera Wagh Al-Qamar (Face of the Moon)
-- this year she will be presenting a
daily blessing, on radio station Sowt al-Arab (Voice
of the Arabs), directly after the maghrib (sunset)
call to prayer.
