REACTIONS
The Washington Post cautiously applauds Mubarak's move, but
couples that with a warning
that "the danger of a false reform is great." Another
Post article credits
Bush and the war on Iraq for the transformations taking place...
FT says
Mubarak surprised
his own party as much as his opponents. It also quotes an expert
as saying that opposition parties have no chance of competing for
the presidency as long as the media and state security are closely
tied to the ruling party.
Reuters
also says Mubarak would sweep
the elections in any case... AP's latest version quotes several opposition
groups...
Christian Science
Monitor is skeptical,
and LA Times quotes
a lot of skeptical Cairenes...
Another LA Times piece looks at the decision from a USAID
angle...
AP gets a few
early comments on the sudden announcement by
President Hosni Mubarak about amending the constitution
to turn electing the president into a direct poll with multiple

AP story quotes several opposition
commentators (including Ayman Nour and the Muslim
Brotherhood), many of whom fear
Mubarak's move is only cosmetic... Plus, here's Reuters's
take.
The New York Times reports that
Washington is cautiously
optimistic, and won't comment on whether it was pressure from
their side that inspired the move. Another NY Times story quotes Essam
El-Erian and Ibrahim Eissa...
A BBC analysis calls
the move "very
astute".
Arab News quotes
Egyptian expats
in Saudi Arabia as being happy with the move... Khaleej Times does
the same in Dubai...
Meanwhile, Nour ends

and protestors want
him released...
