El-Baz warns against regional flare-up
(cairolive.com, April 1, 2002)
Top Presidential political advisor Osama El-Baz is quoted in Monday's Al-Ahram and Al-Akhbar as saying that if Israel is aiming to spark a wider regional war in the Middle East, it will be the losing party on the economic, military and political levels, and that Israel knows this well. El-Baz's quotes are from an appearance he made on a recent TV talk show. El-Baz also said the Palestinians had the right to resist Israeli occupation, but that this should be done without harm to civilians.

No suggestion to airlift Arafat
(cairolive.com, April 1, 2002)
A front page item in Al-Ahram rejects claims made by the Independent newspaper in the UK that Egypt has suggested airlifting Yasser Ararat out of Ramallah to Cairo. The paper had reported that Arafat had not agreed to the idea, choosing to die as a martyr instead of giving up. The official source quoted by Al-Ahram says the Independent's story is a figment of the imagination.

Al-Wafd takes it to the Americans
(cairolive.com, April 1, 2002) Al-Wafd chairman No'man Gomaa and a delegation from the opposition party presented a formal letter of complaint to the US Embassy in Cairo yesterday, calling on the US to force Israel to halt its war against the Palestinians, the paper reports on its front page. The letter called on the American public -- who it says established their nation on principles of democracy, human rights and freedom -- to push President Bush to take a strong, just stance on the issue.
In a front page column, the paper's editor, Magdi Mehanna argues that if an emergency Arab summit or other high-level meeting held to deal with the current crisis, ends up offering diplomatic solutions, it would be better not to have the summit at all.
The paper's co-editor Abbas El-Tarabili, meanwhile, says Egypt must be careful not to fall into the trap of 1967, and get dragged into a costly war.
