Al-Aqsa on the Autostrade
Egyptians continue to show their loyalty to the Palestinian cause and the Al-Aqsa Intifada in any way they can. This lighted replica of Al-Masjid Al-Sakhra in Al-Quds (Jerusalem) is on the Autostrade in Nasr City, placed there by a local merchant as a sort of giant Ramadan fanous lantern. A smaller version of the Dome of the Rock fanous has been available since last year, and it sings Fayrouz's famous Zahrat Al-Mada'in. In general, this year's Ramadan lanterns continue to expand their repertoire of shapes, sizes and themes, with religious models that broadcast the call to prayer, as well as more secular ones that belt out the latest tunes, and even the pep songs for the Ahli and Zamalek soccer clubs.
