Politics/headline news
Medicine not allowed?
(cairolive.com, April 8, 2002) A tiny item on the front page of Monday's Al-Wafd reports that Israel has sealed its border with Egypt at Rafah, just as the first shipments of much-needed medicines and health supplies collected in Egypt were arriving to cross over to Gaza. The paper says the shipment is waiting at the border to cross, but Israel has announced it has closed the Rafah border indefinitely.

New developments
Elections all over today

(cairolive.com, April 8, 2002)
Local municipal elections are taking place around the country today. The elections feature quite a few younger candidates, who will be cutting their political teeth on local issues if elected.  Al-Ahram reports that candidates from the ruling National Democratic Party are expected to be the big winners in most districts, with some 70 per cent running unopposed. 11,000 opposition and independent
candidates are amongst those competing for the nearly 50,000 local posts.

Commentary

Much of the commentary scattered throughout the paper reflects the feeling that US President George Bush's telling Sharon to withdraw and Sharon ignoring the warning, was all a rehearsed act.
