Education
Mark your calendar
Students and parents will only have to wait until 12 July to either breathe sighs of relief, or scream out in despair -- that's the date that's been announced in the papers for the release of this year's Thanawiyya Amma final secondary school exam results. The students are busy taking the grueling two week exams now, more than fully aware that the exams are the main determinant of their educational future. Only 48 hours after the results are announced, universities will start accepting their upcoming freshmen classes.
Environment
Welcome to Wadi Rayan
Wadi Rayan got a visitor's center last week, according to an item in Al-Ahram. Environment Minister Nadia Makram Ebied attended the center's opening, along with the Fayoum governor and the Italian ambassador. The natural desert protectorate is a popular picnic destination thanks to its dunes and waterfalls. Wadi Rayan is 140 kilometers from Cairo, at the edge of the Fayoum oasis.
Exhibitions/events
Kids stuff
An "International Exhibition for Arab Child" is scheduled for 2-8 July at the Nasr City Fairgrounds, according to an advert in the papers. The exhibit's wings will cover the Health, Style, Culture and Entertainment of children -- products will be on display, and the whole event is being held under the auspices of Prime Minister Atef Ebeid.

Playing on people's pickiness
With summer starting to dig deep, a lot of people are thinking about getting air conditioners, if they don't already have them. There's always that problem of having to break down walls, however, and maybe change the electric meter to one with a higher voltage -- this week several full page ads in the papers tried to sell a new air conditioner that would do away with all that. Unionaire's new machine is a "plug in" model, meaning you don't have to break walls to install it (according to the clever ad). It even features a cheaper version that cools only (most people don't ever use the heat options on the their air conditioners, even in winter, for fear of catching colds). The ad says that with this machine, you supposedly also don't need to change the meter.
Tourism
Roger Moore and the Millennium
The port at Alexandria had a big day recently, according to an item on the back page of Al-Ahram. Millennium, the world's largest cruise ship, docked in Alex, with 2000 passengers and 975 crew on board. Another ship, Olympia, had less people, but Roger Moore, aka James Bond, was amongst them, as were 6 other movie stars, part of the cast of Moore's latest film, some of which will apparently be shot between Alexandria and Cairo. Over 5000 tourists docked in Alexandria that day, the paper says, most of whom took buses into Cairo for a day trip to the major sights.
