Strangling Powell's peace
mission
(cairolive.com,
April 18, 2002) A cartoon on the front page of Al-Wafd shows
Colin Powell being shaken and strangled by Ariel Sharon in the first
frame, and Powell subsequently shaking and strangling Arafat in the
second frame. The cartoon is meant to be a summary of "Powell's
Middle East mission". Cartoonist Fathi also weighs in on the
issue here.

Bad timing
(cairolive.com,
April 18, 2002) There's a significant amount of critical
commentary in the papers about the timing of Qatari satellite
channel Al-Jazeera's release of the Sept 11 hijacker tape... A back
page column in Al-Wafd asks why a channel that purports to
sympathize with the Palestinian cause, is now reinforcing to the
world that Arabs are terrorists? A Sikeena Fouad column in
Al-Ahram also tackles the same issue, and Shrinking Globe asks Why
now?

Naughty sheep
spoils birthday bash
(cairolive.com,
April 18, 2002) A sheep wreaked havoc at a birthday party being
thrown in the honor by a school supervisor in Ismailiya, according
to a tiny item on the front page of a recent Al-Wafd. A couple of
naughty students untied the sheep, which was set to be slaughtered
and eaten, and it ended up running amok in the school's courtyard,
disrupting the band that was playing, and even venturing into the
school's classrooms and injuring a few students, before calm
resumed. The paper says Education Ministry authorities have decided
to transfer the supervisor -- who shouldn't have been using school
grounds for the party -- to another job as a
result.
