No Alex underground for now
(cairolive.com, April 11, 2002)The Transport Ministry currently has more pressing priorities than starting up ambitious projects like an underground metro system for the coastal city of Alexandria.
That particular, much-discussed idea is being put on the back shelf for now, reports Al-Ahram, which covered a recent appearance by new Transport Minister Hamdi El-Shayeb in front of the People's Assembly.
El-Shayeb said the Ministry would be concentrating its efforts on upgrading every facet of the Egyptian railway system. Establishing an improved climate of industrial safety was also at the essence of the ministry's plans, and a media campaign, El-Shayeb said, would help in that regard.
