Uncertain itinerary:
Powell in town
(cairolive.com, April 9, 2002) US
Secretary of State
Colin Powell arrives in Cairo this afternoon after meeting with King
Mohamed 6 in Morocco yesterday. King Mohamed -- in some way
reflecting the sentiment in the Arab world that Powell's trip is not
really meant to ensure Israel's rapid withdrawal from Palestinian
cities -- asked the US Secretary of State why he did not go straight
to the heart of the conflict in Jerusalem first.
Powell will be meeting with President Hosni Mubarak as he attempts
to sound out moderate Arab views regarding the escalating crisis.

Medicine on the way?
(cairolive.com, April 9, 2002) Front page items in Tuesday's
Al-Ahram and Al-Akhbar indicate that Israel opened up the border
with Egypt at Rafah to allow a shipment of health supplies collected
by Egyptian NGOs to cross over into the occupied Palestinian
territories. On Monday Al-Wafd had reported that the border had been
sealed off indefinitely, and that the supplies
were not able to get through.

Is Syria
dumping cotton?
(cairolive.com, April 9, 2002) The
Economy Ministry has decided to impose a 150 per cent customs duty
on cotton products coming in from Syria for the next year, in a move
it claims is meant to protect Egyptian industry from unfair dumping
practices.
An item on Al-Akhbar's front page also reports that an Egyptian
delegation will be visiting Syrian factories in an attempt to find
out the exact production costs of the cotton goods in question.
