National team ties Cote d'Ivoire
In yet another qualifying match towards the 2002 World Cup, the Egyptian national soccer team tied Cote d'Ivoire 2-2 on Sunday night. All four goals were scored in the second half. The tie does practically nothing for the team's ranking in its division, as the pressure is still on to defeat Morocco on Morocco's home turf on June 30th for Egypt to have any chance of advancing to the tournament.

Ahli wins for the 32nd time
Egypt won the Egyptian Cup soccer tournament on Friday night, after a grueling match against Ghazl Al-Mahalla that went into overtime. The scoreless regular time tie was broken by Ahli with a minute left in the first half of extra play. A second goal in the extra time's second half seal Ahli's victory at 2-0. It is the 32nd time the boys in red have come home with the national title.

Tourists to accompany world folklore performers
35 folklore troupes from some 30 nations will be participating in this fall's Ismailiya Folklore festival. The always colorful international festival is a real crowd-pleaser, and the crowds at this year's festival, according to authorities quoted in Al-Wafd, will also include tour groups which will be accompanying the folklore troupes from Europe, the States and other places.

Television
Shaarawi's story to be told
Screenwriter Bahaaeddin Ibrahim has already written 16 episodes of a new TV series about the life of the late Sheikh Mohamed Metwalli Shaarawi. Shaarwai was a household name, loved by millions for his method of interpreting the Quran and discussing religious issues.
A TV celebrity, Shaarawi died three years ago -- and soon after several parties became interested in dramatizing his life for the screen. Among them were the Adl brothers, the famous film producers. Al-Wafd says Shaarawi's family chose Ibrahim, who already had half the script ready. Along with producer Hassan Youssef (the former bad boy actor who now only does religious serials), and actor Ahmed Zaki (who, with Nasser and Sadat under his belt clearly relishes the historic roles), the team hopes to be able to finish the series in time to air on TV next Ramadan.
