A peek at the
world's press
(cairolive.com, May 13, 2002) Four headlines on the front
page of Al-Akhbar on Monday are noteworthy... they're all quotes
from the Western press.
CNN called the Sharm El-Sheikh mini summit a confirmation of the
Saudi peace plan.
The Washington Post's article on the decline in violent extremism in
Egypt is headlined.
The Independent's story regarding a decline in sales of American
products being the result of the boycott is also brought to
attention.
And finally, an item from the Sunday Telegraph: Saddam suggests
hosting Arafat.
The paper thus manages to pick and choose from the Western coverage
it has decided to show its readers. A useful, friendly service
bringing other voices and opinions to the forefront as well as
giving those who can't read English a window into what the press
around the world is reporting..

(cairolive.com, May 13, 2002) Yesterday's Arab mini-summit in
Sharm El-Sheikh between Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, Saudi
Crown Prince Abdallah and Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad garnered
a great deal of media attention, both in the Arabic and Western
press. To see what was said see this
report from Reuters ...
Meanwhile, today's Al-Ahram features a back page ad from the Four
Seasons Hotel in Sharm El-Sheikh, where the conference was held,
thanking both Mubarak and Abdalla. The two leaders inaugurated the
resort yesterday before holding the conference there.
Egyptian and Saudi companies helped build the luxurious hotel.

Quick
inspiration
(cairolive.com, May 13, 2002) Scriptwriter Youssry El-Guindy
wasted no time in deciding to do a feature film on the Church of the
Nativity standoff.
He'll be heading to Bethlehem with director Said Marzouq to
interview and talk to same of the church leaders and resistance
fighters who had intimate knowledge of the siege.
The film will be a co-production by several Arab satellite channels,
says El-Akhbar, and will be dubbed into English and French in an attempt
to let the whole world know what really happened there.
El-Guindy says there is plenty of material to mine for good dramatic
stories.
Crime
A Mogamma in his
apartment
(cairolive.com, May 13, 2002) Police have caught up with a
counterfeiter El-Akhbar describes as having "an entire mogamma"
in his apartment. The Mogamma is the large government building in
Tahrir Square where people go for much of their official paperwork.
This fellow was forging everything from birth to death certificates
and anything in between. Police say he had 101 different counterfeit
government seals in his possession.
