Fasten that belt
![](../frontpic/seatbelt1.jpg)
The New Traffic law went into effect on January 1, 2001, with fines ranging from 50 to 100 pounds now being levied on those who do not fasten their seat belts. The seat belt law applies to both the driver and front seat passenger. The law also stipulates that mobile phone use must be limited to hands-free headsets, and that both the driver and passenger on motorcycles must wear helmets. Passed earlier by parliament, the law was given a transition period wherein those with older model cars would have the time to install seat belts in their vehicles before its enforcement began.
