Concern for the environment
(cairolive.com, May 29, 2002) President
Hosni Mubarak
is heading for the United States in early June to meet with US
President George Bush... Primary on the agenda -- jump-starting the
moribund Middle East peace process.
At home, Mubarak recently outlined a long
range plan to upgrade Egypt's environmental outlook. Currently, 8 per cent of Egypt's
land has been earmarked as natural protectorates -- the president wants that number to
climb up to 17 percent by 2017. Mubarak also called for an end to
any construction project that causes pollution near archaeological or tourist sites...
Sports
Only a miracle
(cairolive.com, May 29, 2002) Top soccer club Ismaili's
3-0 victory over Mehalla on Tuesday has put the team in a position to
virtually guarantee its leadership of this year's clubs league. At
63 points with just one match remaining, Ismaili retained its 2 point lead over
Ahly, which also won, pummeling Sohag 4-0.
Ahly's last match -- against Moqawaloon -- promises to be tough,
while Ismaili's -- against Masri -- looks easy, meaning Ahly needs to win big and
Ismaili lose big for Ahly to
come out on top.. a virtually miraculous impossible situation, as
much of the press is putting it. Saturday's Akhbar al-Youm helped
readers out by providing a chart of each team's totals, revealing the press's
continuing attempts to become more user-friendly, a virtual necessity in a
changing media landscape.

Trustee passes away
(cairolive.com, May 29, 2002) Harvard professor Stephen Jay Gould
has passed away... Gould -- a leading scientist -- was also on the
Bibliotheca
Alexandrina's Board of Trustees. The library's director, Ismail
Serageddin, is
quoted on the back page of Wednesday's Al-Ahram saying the library
had lost one of its strongest supporters...
