Facing the storm

First-time director Khaled Youssef has a word with star Youssra minutes before the private screening of Youssef's new film El-Asifa (The Storm), at Cinema Odeon downtown Wednesday night. The film, a well-made saga of an Egyptian family torn apart by the Gulf War, is probably the first big-budget Arab effort at dramatizing the conflict, and will probably make the rounds of film festivals around the world. Starring Youssra, Hisham Selim, Sami El-Adl, Hanan Turk, Hani Salama and Mohamed Nagati, the film, which opens commerically this week, won a Special Recognition Award at the 2000 Cairo International Film Festival.
