Non-stop shop
Residents of three Heliopolis neighborhoods were surprised to find new supermarkets suddenly appear on their streets recently. The sudden appearance of the three Metro express supermarkets were especially remarkable because of how quickly they were built. To the residents, it seemed like they went from red brick to cans on the shelves in just three days. The supermarkets, featuring new shopping concepts for Egypt, such as prepackaged fresh meat, fruit, vegetable and cheeses, are sure to make waves amongst local merchants and the traditional "baqal" grocer. But the economic viability of the 24-hour stores remains to be seen, and comes in the wake of questions regarding the balance sheets of a similar influx of local branches of UK supermarket giant Sainbury's.
