Youth team third in world, military first
The under-20 national soccer team came away from its match with Paraguay on Sunday as the third best team in the world of youth soccer. The teams were playing for the bronze in the under-20 World Cup which just concluded in Argentina. Argentina won the tournament, soundly defeating Ghana 3-0. Meanwhile, Egypt's 1-0 triumph over Paraguay means the boys will be coming home to a hero's welcome.
Meanwhile, the World Military Soccer championships, which were taking place in Cairo, ended on Friday night with the hometown team -- Egypt -- first in the world. This is the third time Egypt has won the championship, meaning the cup will stay in Cairo permanently. The relatively easy 3-0 victory over Greece was followed closely by millions of fans on TV, and by President Hosni Mubarak personally at the Military College in Heliopolis, where the final contest took place.

New developments
Autostrade to be named Abdel-Nasser
The Autostrade highway traversing Cairo's outer limits from the airport to Maadi, is to be officially named after Gamal Abdel-Nasser, according to a tiny item on the front page of a recent Al-Akhbar. The decision to honor the late president was taken by Cairo governorate, along with a change of name for Midan Al-Nafoora in Moqattam. That square will now bear the name of leader Mustafa Al-Nahhas.

Most papers front-paged the news that an Egyptian doctor would be treating former Philippine first lady Imelda Marcos. The doctor's name is Mohamed Eid Fawzy -- a King Faisal hospital cardiologist who will be performing a delicate surgery in an attempt to clear Marcos's arteries.

Miscellaneous
Local imams to be honored
For the fifth straight year the Awqaf (Religious Endowments) Ministry will be honoring ideal imams from all of Egypt's governorates. Al-Ahram reports that the prize includes LE2000 and an umra trip as well. The chosen imams will have demonstrated dedication to their job and successful community outreach and interaction.

Remember the summer ticket?
A few weeks ago we featured a news item about reduced prices at Dreampark. Now the amusement park, situated in 6 October just outside Cairo, is doing what its counterparts in the United States do to hook more customers, especially kids in the summertime. A half page ad in the papers announced the availability of the "Cool card", which allows unlimited access to the park for LE100. Plus perks of course, like discounts on park food.

Television
Lots of awards for flowers
Both Awan Al-Ward (Flowers Bloom) and Wagh Al-Qamar, the two Egyptian stand-out Ramadan TV dramas, picked up awards at the 7th Television and Radio Festival, which ended in Cairo with a gala ceremony on Saturday night. Find out more about the rest of the festival winners here.
