Ad watch
Hats off to winning ads
"Alo Alo", the extremely popular mobile phone ad starring pop crooner Hakim, and produced by ad agency MCR, was one of the big winners at this year's Rameh awards for excellence and creativity in advertising. The ad -- which plugs phone cards from Mobinil -- features Hakim running late for a concert and singing into his mobile phone, which someone places next to the microphone on the empty stage till he arrives. The ad took the bronze in the television category, as did another celebrity endorsement, singer Nawal Al-Zoghby's ad for Pepsi, which was produced by Impact.
Pepsi also had another successful ad, in their billboard which appears on 6 October Bridge. The crisp graphics and the large revolving red, white, and blue ball, produced by Tarek Badr advertising agency, certainly distinguishes the billboard from all the others crowding the scenery. The ad took the silver prize in the outdoor ads category.
Mobile phone company Click brought home the gold in the overall "campaign" category, for a series of ads directed by Sherif Sabry. Strategy, meanwhile, also picked up an award for an interesting TV ad for Chevrolet which involves drivers looking on jealously as their colleague who has a Chevy continuously has work while they sit idle.
Marketing Mix, meanwhile, won a silver for their ad for safe hair shampoo, which feature the rapid camera movements, and dynamic models that have become the norm in ads these days.

Miscellaneous
Sudanese giant turns heads
A very tall Sudanese man caused enough of a ruckus at Cairo airport earlier this week, for Al-Ahram to feature an item about the incident on its front page. The 2.27 meter tall fellow is on a month long stopover in Cairo, on his way from Sudan to the US. He says his height has always caused him problems, especially when it comes to people always staring at him. At Cairo airport, the paper says, several tourists were so amazed by his height that they requested having their picture taken with him.

Traffic
Billions lost in jams
Egypt's economy suffers to the tune of LE1.5 billion per annum in lost productivity, resulting from traffic jams, according to a World Bank report. Amongst the other interesting figures recently released by the Ministry of Transport was that nations should have some 4-5 traffic experts per 100 urban citizens. To get that ratio, Egypt needs an extra 600 or so traffic experts. That represents, of course, a huge lack of expertise in this domain, which probably means that Cairo's traffic won't be getting significantly better anytime soon.

Health
Tobacco company warns against smoking
In an interesting move, Philip Morris, along with its local partners, the Eastern Tobacco company and Lutfy Mansour, have just launched a campaign aimed at reducing the number of smokers under the age of 18. The campaign involves posters that say, in Arabic "Under 18 unacceptable, over 18 you're responsible," making clear the dangers of smoking, and the risks inherent in smoking if you're underage.

New developments
Egypt wins garden competition
The Carthage Festival for International Gardens took place in Tunisia recently, with Egypt winning first place for its entry, a 400 meters square garden with a pharaonic theme. France, Greece, Italy, Syria and Morocco were amongst the other participants in this all-Mediterranean contest. If anything, the victory proves that Egyptians can produce pleasant gardens -- the only problem is that they really need to produce more of them in Egypt itself.
