Preserving the flame

In the early morning of February 22, the sun's rays traveled nearly seventy meters into the Abu Simbel temple (above top), in Egypt's deep south, to light up the face of the statue of Ramsis the second in the temple's inner sanctum (above bottom). This phenomenal occurrence takes place twice a year, on February and October 22. This year some 3000 tourists were on hand to witness the event.
