In brief
Celebrating the revolution
Monday July 23 is the 49th anniversary of the July 23, 1952 Egyptian Revolution. On that day, the Free Officers, a group of young army officers led by Colonel Gamal Abdel-Nasser, staged a bloodless coup that forced King Farouk to abdicate, and soon thereafter leave the country, ending the dynasty begun by the Albanian Mohamed Ali in the early 19th century. The revolution signified the first time an Egyptian had ruled Egypt since the days of the pharaohs.
July 23 is a national holiday for both the public and private sectors.
Sports
Too little, too late for soccer team
Hoping against all hope, millions of Egyptians sat glued in front of their TV screens on Saturday evening at 6 pm, to find out whether a miracle would occur, and the national soccer team would qualify for the 2002 World Cup. The miracle did not occur -- far from it -- even though, with twenty minutes remaining in the second half, things did look on the bright side. Egypt was up 1-0 over Algeria, and in the decisive match being played at the same time, Senegal only had a 3-0 lead over Namibia. Had things stayed that way for another 20 minutes, Egypt would have been in, thanks to its two point led in overall goal difference over Senegal. Unfortunately, matters soon deteriorated on both fields, with Senegal scoring another two goals, and Algeria tying the score with Egypt.
Thus, it is Senegal that will be advancing to the prestigious international tournament, while the Egyptian team and its coach Mahmoud El-Gohari are returning home with their heads hung low. Gohari has been quoted in the press saying he would voluntarily quit if the team didn't qualify -- in any case, more than a few people are calling for him to be fired.
Junior star in accident
Mohamed El-Yamany, one of the bright stars of Egypt's junior soccer team, which finished a very respectable third in the under 20 World Cup tournament recently concluded in Argentina, crashed his car on the Ismailiya desert highway last week, and has been in the hospital ever since.
Yamany was in intensive care in a coma -- but now, the papers report, his condition is improving, and he should be out of the hospital in a week. Whether he will pursue treatment abroad is still up in the air...

Qur'an in Hebrew
Saudi Arabia's King Fahd Institute has decided to translate the meaning of the Holy Quran into Hebrew. According to a tiny item on the front page of Al-Wafd, Hebrew will be the 40th language that the institute has translated the Muslim holy book into.
