Education
Here we go again?
Ever since the Thanwaiyya Amma final secondary school exam results were announced a few weeks ago, the papers have been filled with news of college acceptance rates at schools across the country. The latest results indicate that thanawiyya amma scores had to exceed nearly 96 per cent in order for students to be accepted into medical school. Both the faculty of politics and economy and the faculty of mass communication require a 94 per cent passing grade this year. Students and parents are frantically filling out applications over the next week or so, and then waiting anxiously to find out if they've been accepted to the school of their choice. Meanwhile, internet web site addresses have again been announced in the papers for those students who wish to find out if their scores got them accepted into the faculty of their choice. The addresses printed in the paper are:
tansek.gov.eg
tansek.cairo.eun.eg
There are also phone numbers available for more information:
3333199, 3333000, 3333001

Ahly-Real Madrid match-up gaining momentum
August 4 is the big day for soccer fans worldwide as a friendly exhibition match is set to take place in Cairo between top Egyptian club Ahly and the world-famous Spanish team Real Madrid. Ahly decided to organize the contest after recently being labeled the "club of the century for the African continent". Ahly paid Real Madrid some $1.5 million to play the match, and according to the latest reports in the papers, they have already managed to recover some 80 per cent of those costs, and are expected to come out of the contest having doubled their money, via corporate sponsorships, ticket sales, TV rights and the like. Tickets are not going on sale until August 1 in an attempt, officials say, to minimize as much as possible, the risk of the tickets being counterfeited. Ticket prices range from the hundreds to the thousands of pounds, and word on the street is that a sell out seems inevitable.

How to host 65 heads of state
A top Alexandrian consular expert is quoted on the front page of a recent Al-Wafd indicating that there may be potential problems with the city hosting some 65 heads of state for next year's official gala inauguration of the Bibliotecha Alexandrina, the reconstruction of the ancient Library of Alexandria of yore. The expert says the city does not have enough hotel capacity to accommodate the heads of state as well as the thousands of other guests who will be descending on Alexandria for the occasion. His suggestion: restore the Antoniados Palace and set it up to host the VIPs.

Television
Israeli satellite channel on the way
Israel has announced that it is developing a satellite TV station meant to compete with the Arab satellite channels that already exist. The channel will broadcast in both English and Arabic, and is set to begin transmission in November, according to a tiny item on the front page of a recent Al-Akhbar. It will be available, the item says, in the Gulf, North Africa and the Middle East.
