Wish you were here March 30, 2001
Legendary singer Abdel-Halim Hafez passed away 24 years ago this Friday. On March 30, 1977, when he finally succumbed to a lifelong bout with bilharzia, the 48-year-old singer had already become a landmark in Arabic music history, amazing audiences with songs like "Gabaar" and "Qa'riat Al-Fingan". He also starred in a bevy of romantic films, the most famous of which is probably "Al-Wisada Al-Khaliya". Most of all, though, Abdel-Halim Hafez remains in our hearts to this day as a result of the tortured, passionate figure he cut no matter what he did.
